After pushing back the release date three times, former The X Factor USA contestants Fifth Harmony finally released their debut album, Reflection, on Feb. 3.

The girl group placed third on The X Factor back in 2012 and were immediately signed to Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid’s label, Epic (Syco Music). Since The X Factor, Fifth Harmony has quickly gathered millions of fans.

Reflection contains a collection of girl power anthems and songs that speak to issues of teenage insecurity, body image, and sexuality. The album also includes collaborations with rappers Kid Ink and Tyga.

“Bo$$,” the album’s first single, is packed with lyrics that encourage young girls to be “bosses” like Michelle Obama and Oprah. The second single, “Sledgehammer,” is a synthpop/new wave-styled song co-written by Meghan Trainor. The girls’ vocals bloom throughout the song, and the bridge brilliantly expresses the singers’ emotions.

Arguably the best song on the entire album, “Like Mariah” featuring Tyga, plays with the iconic Mariah Carey hook from “Always Be My Baby.” Even though Tyga himself is entirely irrelevant with his (do I dare say?) sloppy rapping skills, “Like Mariah” is still a major fan favorite.

Fifth Harmony might be the new girl group in town, but they’re capable of being the new queens of pop with their slick synthpop and R&B tunes.
